Engineered Platform Traits
TransAlgae has developed unique, IP-protected, genetic transformation technologies for many species of marine algae. TransAlgae has created a platform technology by introducing traits that are fundamental for continuous, stable and biosafe algal production.
Two of the most vital of these platform traits are:
· Herbicide resistance + lessens downtime due to contamination by other algae
· Transgenic Mitigation (“a genetic failsafe switch”) that prevents algae that are inadvertently released to the environment from establishing, meeting biosafety requirements.
TransAlgae is developing additional crop protection traits that enhance and support the use of algae as platform for production of high value products.
Harvesting Process Optimization
A major cost in algal production is the high cost of harvesting which is presently done by expensive centrifugation. TransAlgae has developed a very low cost and non toxic flocculation system, thus reducing harvest costs by more than tenfold.
